Studying abroad? Here's what you need to know about your health insurance
If you are going to study abroad, this may have consequences for your health insurance. It is important to know whether you remain insured and what steps you may need to take. On this page, you can find specific information for each country or region, what you need to arrange exactly depends on your destination.
Studying elsewhere
If you are going to study in Aruba, Curaçao or St. Maarten, you remain insured through ZJCN.
In that case, there are two obligations that must be met in order to remain insured:
Notification requirement
Prior to your departure abroad, you must report that you are going to study in the region. You can do this by visiting the office of ZJCN or by sending an email to studentenBES@zorgverzekeringskantoor.nl. Indicate in your email the date of departure, the educational institution and the training programme you are going to follow.
School certificate
You are required to submit a current school certificate each school year. You can send this by email to studentenBES@zorgverzekeringskantoor.nl.
If you are going to study in the United States, you must take out your own health insurance. You can claim the costs of this insurance up to an amount of USD 2,500 per year from ZJCN.
You can find more information about claiming health expenses here.
