Safe Together Strong Together
Everyone deserves a safe home. With this in mind, the Protection Code, which has been in force since 1 January 2025, was developed for the Caribbean Netherlands.
The Safe Together Strong Together campaign aims to support professionals such as social workers, teachers and care workers in applying the new Protection Code. In addition, advice centres were set up on each island where anyone can go for help, advice or questions.
Protection Code for professionals
Since 1 January 2025, organisations have been required to work with the Protection Code. The Protection Code, consisting of five steps, provides professionals with clarity about what is expected of them if they suspect domestic violence or child abuse. A reporting obligation has also been established, allowing professionals to report signs of domestic violence or child abuse under clear conditions.
Protection Code for citizens
For the citizens of the islands, the Protection Code means that professionals must proceed with caution and discuss their suspicions with the client or the parents before reporting them.
Advisory point
Citizens and professionals with concerns about domestic violence and child abuse can contact a special advice point. On each island, there is an advice point that provides appropriate advice in every situation. These advice points help to answer questions, provide support and deal with reports if necessary.
